East Whatcom County Community Information

The Eastern portion of Whatcom County is dotted with a few small towns along the westerly edges of the foothills leading to the Cascade Mountains and Mt. Baker. Everson, Nooksack and Sumas are the major population centers with Acme, Maple Falls, VanZandt, Kendall & Glacier primarily marked by a local grocery and gas facility. The economy is based on farming, forest products and recreation, and the recreation is incredible.

Hiking and camping opportunities are endless, with much of the eastern county designated as national forest. Wildlife is prolific – a high point of our drive to the Mt. Baker ski area is watching elk feed just off the highway. Vistas are gorgeous, with a different view of the Nooksack River, Mt. Shuksan, Mt Baker or the Sisters around every bend of the road.

And that brings us to Mt. Baker, rated by some people as the best ski and snow boarding mountain in North America. We have skied it for over 30 years, and while there are more people than there used to be, on a sunny afternoon of spring skiing the only thing limiting the number of runs you can make is your fitness level. And if you are a boarder, Mt. Baker was an incubator of the sport and boasts the only natural half-pipe there is

Snow Day Driving Diary

December 18, 2008
Wow what a day! After shoveling my car out of a drift that had formed on it over night, defrosting it to the point I could actually open the door and scraping of the windows I set out for the office. Today was our holiday gathering and being the only one who lives out in the [...]

Another Reason to Love Whatcom County, Mt. Baker

September 30, 2008
Trying to take full advantage of some of the last “warm” days of this year we took a drive up some logging road on Washington State DNR land to enjoy the stunning views of Mt. Baker and the foothills that surrounds it. This particular picture was taken from Sumas Mountian.    Just another reason why I feel so [...]

It all comes down to money

May 19, 2006
Whatcom County Council this week defended their decision to put the new community center on the donated land in Balfour Village as opposed to the land across the street from Kendall Elementary School. The land opposite the school at Kendall Road and Mt. Baker Highway was favored by most because they felt that it was [...]

East County Community Center Location Chosen

May 11, 2006
In a unanimous vote, the Whatcom County council selected the less popular of two potential sites for a new community center. 3.7 acres across the street from the elementary school at the intersection of Kendall Rd and Mount Baker Highway was favored by residents for its easy access to all of the east county communities. [...]

Kendall Area Community Center

May 08, 2006
Eastern Whatcom County – For most Bellingham residents, it is a few small towns on the way to Mt. Baker. However, this area is growing faster than most. Kendall, Paradise, Maple Falls, Peaceful Valley, Glacier and Deming all have growing residential areas, but services out there are very limited. Currently, the closest boys and girls [...]
