Sledding at Mt. Baker a Fun Winter Activity!

January 23rd, 2012 by Fawn | Posted in NEIGHBORHOODS, Random, Whatcom County, Whatcom County Events | No Comments »

Willy SledJust in case you or your children did not get enough of the snow last week and are looking for some more sledding and play time you might want to check out sledding up by the Mt. Baker Ski Area.   There is no specific area in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has been set aside for sledding, and it’s banned inside the Mt. Baker Ski Area.  You will see signs within the ski area advising you not to sled as it can pose a danger to skiers and snowboarders.

Unofficially, you can go just  outside the ski area’s boundaries to sled down the hills around the frozen lakes of Highwood Lake and Picture Lake. The area around Bagley Lake also is great area to check out.   That being said be sure and pay attention on warm days or years when there is little snow fall to be sure the lakes are frozen solid and ready for sledding. We were up this weekend and the conditions were PERFECT for family friendly sledding.

Directions:Go east on state route 542 until you reach the Mt. Baker Ski Area. Park in the upper parking lot. Look for people carrying sleds or big tire tubes. You will find the lakes on your right hand side over the large snow banks. Little trails will be built in the snow bank to allow children and families to get up and over the banks and into the sledding area.

Semiahmoo Park – A Whatcom County Gem!

October 5th, 2010 by Fawn | Posted in Birch Bay/Blaine, Whatcom County, Whatcom County Events, Whatcom County Recreation | 1 Comment »

Semiahmoo Real EstateWith the weather on Saturday you could hardly believe that it was October. I took advantage of the great weather and headed out to Semiahmoo Spit and walked the trails of Semiahmoo Park.

For those of you not familar with Semiahmoo it’s a 1.5 mile long sandspit with incredible views of Drayton Harbor, Semiahmoo Bay and Mt.Baker.   Semiahmoo Spit is rich in history having once served as a native american village and as home to a salmon processing facility for nearly 80 years.

Today the spit is occupied by Semiahmoo Resort and Spa at the end of the spit and Semiahmoo Park.  At the park you will find a wealth of recreational opportunities from beach combing to picnicking and walking there is something for everyone.  Yesterday, my daughter McKenna and I enjoyed a wonderful long walk from the park to the resort and back on the fully paved jogging trail while taking in the beautiful views.

If you would like to visit Semiahmoo Spit you get there by taking I-5 exit 270, head west 4 miles to a four way stop at Harbor View Road. Turn right (north) until you get to Lincoln Rd, then left (West) 3.8 miles to Semiahmoo Park.

Not only is the Semiahmoo Park and incredible place but so is the community of Semiahmoo.  A master planned golf course community Semiahmoo is home to two championship designed golf courses, miles of paved walking trails, deep water marina, swimming center, health club, tennis courts and so much more.  If you are interested in Semiahmoo Real Estate visit The Johnson Team’s Semiahmoo Real Estate Page.

Squalicum Harbor

Squalicum Harbor

What a incredible day we are having today. I took some time today and took a wonderful brisk walk along Roeder Ave, Squalicum Harbor and Zuanich Point Park. The sun was shining, Mt. Baker was peaking over the hills and everyone was out enjoying the day. If you have not had a chance to get outside and take advantage of this wonderful weather be sure to take some time and do it, you will be happy you did! Don’t forget about the Marine Touch Tank it’s sure to be a hit with any kids you may have in the family.
