The Neighborhood Playhouse Presents Good Night Moon
a musical by Chad Henry, based on the classic children’s book by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd

In the great, green room…

You know the story, but this is the musical! Catchy songs performed by a live musician, charming choreography, a colorful set that makes you feel like you’ve walked into Clement Hurd’s memorable picture book, and a wonderful cast will make you want to come back night after night before going to bed. “A true celebration of one of the most iconic children’s books of all time”*. Watch as Bunny’s room magically comes alive as “the old lady quietly whispering hush!” tries to put everyone to bed. In the end, Bunny dances and sings her way to sweet dreams. Suitable for all ages.

Cast includes Elizabeth Overstreet, Danyale Tamminga, Lizzi Jackson, William Johnson and Taylor Sundstrom with accompaniment by Michelle Tamir. Special appearance by The Tooth Fairy’s helper!

Below are the performance times:

Saturday, May 5^th at 2:00. This performance is a pay what you can performance in hopes that families that can not usually attend due to finances can come to our events.

Sunday May 6^th at 2:00

Friday, May 11^th at 7:00 (First 12 people in pj’s get a cupcake donated by Katie’s Cupcakes!)

Sat., May 12^th at 2:00* and 5:00

Sunday, May 13^th (Mother’s Day) at 2:00

Tickets are $10 general and $5 for students. Available at both Community Food Co-ops, Piper Music on Meridian, Village Books and at the door.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival- Check it out this weekend!

Although this week’s weather may not have been the most “Spring like” it’s time for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Many of the tulip fields are already in full bloom and gorgeous. Each particular field has it’s own set of activities and hours. Both the RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town fields have beautiful displays ready for you to enjoy! The tulip festival runs from April 1st -31st weather, or as long as the flowers are still in bloom. Many other activities also surround the festival from the Tulip Run to Whale Watching Tours leaving near by Anacortes, it’s sure to be a great trip and day for everyone! Bellingham Farmer’s Market Season Is Upon Us!

If you are looking for a great place to pick up local produce, try amazing food or purchase local crafts the Bellingham Farmer’s Market is the place to do it. Every Saturday April to Christmas the Bellingham Farmer’s Market takes place at the Depot Market Squre at the corner of Railroad and Chestnut Street from 10am to 3pm, rain or shine!

The Depot Market Square is an open-air gathering space perfect or showcasing all the Bellingham and Whatcom County has to offer from gorgeous flower bouquets to locally grown vegetables and fruit there is something for everyone. If you are just looking to get out and take in the sights and sounds there is also talented local musicians that perform at the Market throughout the day as well.

In addition to the Bellingham Farmer’s Market on Saturdays there is also the Wednesday Market held in Fairhaven on the Village Green behind Village Books June to September from 12 to 5pm

Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

For the first time in 5 years St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday which means lots of activities going on in Bellingham and around Whatcom County this weekend. Whether you are looking for a family friendly activity or adult pub fare there is something going on for everyone!

Below is a list of some of the top activities around town this weekend

- Runnin’ O’ the Green sponsored by The Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department is a a 2.7 mile walk/run or a 5 mile run option. The event starts at 10 a.m. at a the Depot Market Square, at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Maple Street. For more information you can call 360-778-7000.

- If you are looking for some all ages fun the third annual St. Pat’s Parade in honor of the Bellingham Police and Fire Department is an all ages affair with the parade loop winding through downtown Bellingham starting in the parking lot at the corner of East Maple and Cornwall Avenue and ending by the Depot Market Square. No entry fee is needed if you are not part of a band or a float. If you would like to dress up and participate in the parade you may arrive in the staging area between 10:30 and 11:30am.

- If adult activities are more your style Uisce Irish Pub located at 1319 Commercial St., opens at 11 a.m. and is featuring live music from 2 p.m. to midnight for people 21 and older.

- Boundary Bay Brewery and Bistro located at 1107 Railroad Ave is hosting an all ages post-parade party with live music until 9pm in the Beer Garden. After 9pm only 21 and over will be allowed.

Whatcom County Home & Garden Show This Weekend!

This weekend March 2-4 you will want to be sure to head out to Lynden and check out the 2012 Whatcom County Home and Garden Show there will be over 200 vendors showcasing different products for your home. Throughout the show there will also be several seminars held including a gardening question and answer with TV personality and gardening expert Cisco Morris. Home and Garden Show Kids Coloring Contest Sheet

Local appliance company DeWaard and Bode and Kafe 104.1 will also be giving away three prizes at the show with a value of over $10,000. You will want to be sure and stop by their display to enter to win a price. For the kids there is also a coloring contest, you can download and print the coloring sheet early by visiting the BIA website.

The Whatcom County Home and Garden Show is being helpd at the Northwest Washington Fair & Events center located at 1775 Front St in Lynden. Tickets prices are $7 for Adults 16 and older, $5 for seniors 55 and older, and children under 16 are free.

Sledding at Mt. Baker a Fun Winter Activity!

Just in case you or your children did not get enough of the snow last week and are looking for some more sledding and play time you might want to check out sledding up by the Mt. Baker Ski Area. There is no specific area in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has been set aside for sledding, and it’s banned inside the Mt. Baker Ski Area. You will see signs within the ski area advising you not to sled as it can pose a danger to skiers and snowboarders.

Unofficially, you can go just outside the ski area’s boundaries to sled down the hills around the frozen lakes of Highwood Lake and Picture Lake. The area around Bagley Lake also is great area to check out. That being said be sure and pay attention on warm days or years when there is little snow fall to be sure the lakes are frozen solid and ready for sledding. We were up this weekend and the conditions were PERFECT for family friendly sledding.

Directions:Go east on state route 542 until you reach the Mt. Baker Ski Area. Park in the upper parking lot. Look for people carrying sleds or big tire tubes. You will find the lakes on your right hand side over the large snow banks. Little trails will be built in the snow bank to allow children and families to get up and over the banks and into the sledding area.

Celebrate Bellingham! Free Ice Skating and Swimming…

The Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department is putting on their annual Celebrate Bellingham! event Thurday, Dec. 29th-Sunday, January 1st. The Sportsplex and the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center are parternering up with the event and offering free ice skating and free swimmingin conjunction with the other activities.

The free ice skating at the Sportsplex includes skate rental and is being offered 9am to 11:45am this Thursday, December 29th-Saturday, Dec. 31st. The free swimming at the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center is being offered 6:45pm to 8pm on Thursday and Friday and 4:30pm to 6:30pm on Saturday.

In addition to the hours and times listed above there will also be the Ring in the New Year at the Sportsplex Party being held 6 to 9pm on New Year’s Eve. The event will feature free indoor soccer play, ice skating, carnival games, and other fun family friendly activities.

If you are looking for something to do on New Year’s Day there will be the free New Year’s Resolution Run/Walk at Lake Padden, followed by the annual Polar Dip into the Lake. The run/walk starts at 11am. Our every own Rich Johnson is Polar Dip Alumni, wonder if we can talk him into doing it again this year?

Looking to take a fun festive photo for the holidays? Are you wanting something other than the typical Santa photo? Then you have found what you are looking for. Come out to Fairhaven and get your picture taken with the Grinch.

The Grinch will be visiting Fairhaven for holiday picturesDecember 17 10am-6pm, December 18th 11am-6pm and December 23rd 10am-6pm. Photo disks are available for $10 and proceeds go to Blue Skies for Children, a long non-profit organization assisting low income and foster children in our community ages 6 to 15.

The Grinch is located in Fairhaven in the Village Books Reading Gallery.

The picture above is of my daughter McKenna with the Grinch last year. We are hoping to make it to see the Grinch again today and I will be sure and post a picture of the latest Grinch visit.

Hot Gypsy Swing at the Firehall in Fairhaven

If you like Django Reinhart and Hot Jazz of the 20′s and 30′s, a fine NW group called Gadjo Gypsies performs tonight (Friday, Dec 16) at 7:30 PM at The Firehouse in Fairhaven. Tickets are $15, at the door or at Quist Violins. Bryan Thurber, violin; Josh Rush, guitar; Jeff Gray, bass. Josh is a fine guitarist in this genre.

Flamenco Dancer Savannah Fuentes is Back

If you like Flamenco, dancer Savannah Fuentes is back with guitarist Pedro Cortes, a fine NY-based player who comes from a family of flamenco guitarists, and now for his first B’ham appearance, Jesus Montoya, a singer with deep Gypsy roots who knows all the cantes, and is equally at home backing dancers or out in front as soloist. He sings exquisite fandangos in the tradition of Rafael Farina. They perform Saturday night, Dec 17th, at the Blue Horse Gallery, STARTING AT 6 PM. $20 general, $12 kids / students / low income.

The Stahlbaums host their annual Christmas party at the Mt Baker Theater. We hope you can join us either this evening @ 7:00, tomorrow at 2:00 or tomorrow evening at 7:00. This magical party includes , dancing mice, marching soldiers, the mystical Godfather Drosselmeyer, sister Clara & brother Fritz, the Sugar Plum Fairy, dancers from throughout the world, a fierce battle between the Nutcracker & the Mouse King to mention just a few of the surprising cast and sizzling scenes.

It’s possible there are parties / productions where the costumes may be more elaborate, the sets more exotic & the music more professional but there could be no production where the Parents could be prouder, the Performers more serious & dedicated nor the choreographers / instructors more caring. This production is sure to warm your heart & put a smile on your face.
