If you were to put a map of Bellingham, Washington on the wall & throw a dart at it, there is not a neighborhood in Bellingham the dart would hit that would not have a lot to boast about. We have a variety of fine neighborhoods with a variety of housing styles, prices, parks & trails.

With that said, one of the Bellingham neighborhoods that the dart might hit would be the Barkley Village Neighborhood. The

Barkley Neighborhood in Bellingham is located Northeast of downtown Bellingham & is generally considered to be that area along Barkley Boulevard to the South, Mt Baker Highway & Sunset to the North, Orleans St to the West & Britton Rd to the East.

It was not so many years ago that this entire area was forested. The only residents were deer, raccoons and an occasional coyote, although the Old Timers talk of cougars there as well. Many a game of hide & seek were played out in these woods by the neighboring children. In talking to a long time resident, she felt it strange & sad that once the trees were cut & the land subdivided, the name “Barkley Woods” was given to one of the subdivisions. She lamented that it was “Woods” in name only. Starting in the early 1990’s this area gave way to what is now Barkley Village Bellingham, Washington’s answer to an evolving “Urban Village”, an area created to allow people to live, shop, work, play & relax all in their own backyard.

Starting from the West with the new Lowe’s Store & working East you have a variety of shops & restaurants. Who can’t spend hours browsing in the new Lowe’s Store off Orleans St? One of our favorite lunch stops is “Neiner Neiner Weiner,” which produces one of the finest hotdogs in Bellingham. If you are interested in a fine steak there is always the Black Forest Steakhouse.

Headed East along Barkley Boulevard you drive past a variety of housing choices ranging from newer apartment complexes to some quaint moderately priced homes in the “Barkley Meadows” neighborhood. Driving still further down Barkley Boulevard you go past the Barkley Medical Center which includes everything from Performance Physical Therapy to the Urgent Care Center. Crossing through the intersection of Barkley Boulevard & Woburn is Heath Tecna (Aircraft Interior Solutions) to the North, which is a major employer in Bellingham. Directly across the street are a variety of businesses ranging from Stewart Title to On Rice -Thai Cuisine.

To the South of this intersection, you have shopping at its finest in Barkely Village Bellingvham Washington. Here you can enjoy a fine cup of Starbucks Coffee, stroll through the aisles of Haggen Grocery or have a nice lunch at one of our favorite places, Pastazza, where there is Pasta with Pazzazz. Leaving Barkley Village & heading West again on Barkley Boulevard, we pass the YMCA Barkley Child Care Center. Next to the Child Care Center is another “Child Care Center” as well, only this care center is for those who were born with a golf club in their hands (or wish they were).
The Hitting Zone is a favorite for the golf enthusiast. Either before work, during a lunch break or after work, the operators, Dean & Chico Russell, will be delighted to help you hone your skills.
Let’s leave the Hitting Range & finsh our drive through Barkley Village & the Barkley Neighborhood. Heading up Barkley Boulevard to the East again we drive along a magnificent street lined with deciduous trees of varying colors of red & orange leading us to some wonderful neighborhoods with a variety of housing choices. Real estate in this section of the Barkley Neighborhood is almost magical with names such as Brandywine Ct, Spyglass, Woodside Way & Tanglewood. Housing choices here range from condominiums to single family homes ranging in price from the low $300,000 to $800,000 range.
