Tips To Improve Your Credit Score

September 16th, 2009 by Fawn | Posted in Banking News, Bellingham, Whatcom County 5 Comments »

creditscoreAre you looking for ways to improve your credit score? Remember, improving your credit score takes time so it’s a good idea to start thinking about it right away if you may have an score that you are not happy with.

One of my personal favorite ways to monitor my credit score is through a credit report and identity theft tracking website, there was many available that will alert you of any changes in your credit score. My personal favorite is www.IdentityGuard.com . The website will alert me if an inquiry has been made using my social security number, a late bill payment has been recorded, or an accounts have been opened or closed. Below are other credit tips.

  • Keep your credit card balances low. Even though you have a high balance doesn’t mean you have to use it. A high balance on your card will have a negative impact on your score.
  • Use the credit cards  you have. It’s often suggested that you charge one or two small items on your card a month and them pay them at months end. This will show you are actively using your card and that you are a valued credit customer perhaps keeping them from closing your account or lowering your credit balances.
  • Limit the number of credit cards which you have. With credit cards it’s not the more the merrier. Be sure and only have cards and accounts which you actively use.

  1. Great advice for maintaining or better your credit score. Another point is that credit card companies don’t care if you payment is 5 minutes late. Late is late & they will charge the late fee no matter what.

  2. Nice post, wonderful advice to us owning a credit cards but you can’t deny the fact that many people are not just satisfied with one credit cards. Me too to have a lot of credit cards but not all of them I used, only two credit cards I’m using.

  3. That is great advise about rebuilding and keep your credit score up. Keep up the good work

Late to the post, but good advice on improving your credit score. I think it’s important to review your credit report from each of the three major reporting agencies closely and immediately clear up any errors. It’s also very important to pay your bills on time. Being delinquent has substantial negative effect on your score. I also think it’s important to pay down your balances on a monthly basis. This will help improve your score as well.

    Keep up the good work.

I wasn’t aware having a high balance can hurt your credit score. In my case, my credit score is great (as far as I know) but I have one credit card with a high balance that I make payments on. Is that going to hurt my score? Thanks in advance
