Thanks to Duncan McLane, chief of the Lummi Island Fire Department and Paul Davis, Editor of Lummi Island’s Tome, over the next few days we will be posting tips to help keep families and their property safe. Last year saw several major fires in Whatcom County, so take note now and don’t be one of the statistics.
The majority of home fires start in the kitchen. The NVFC and Fire Corps offer these tips to make
your kitchen a safe one.

a.. Do not wear loose fitting clothing when cooking, as it is easy to catch on fire.
b.. Always turn pan handles in to prevent food spills and resulting burns.
c.. Make sure that you keep pot holders and towels away from the stove.
d.. Replace any old or frayed electrical cords on your appliances.
e.. Never leave your cooking unattended.
f.. If a fire should occur on the stove, slide a pan lid over the flames and then turn off the
heat.
g.. If a fire should occur in the oven, keep the oven door closed and turn off the heat to
smother the fire.
h.. Always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Make sure it is kept in an accessible place
away from the stove and oven.
i.. If the fire does not go out quickly, use your escape plan and call the fire department
immediately.
