As many of you have I’m sure heard, the new Bellingham airline, Western Airlines, has grounded all of their flights due to financial difficulty only 2 weeks after hitting the skies! I came across a post on The Cranky Flier claiming that Western would probably never fly again.

However, Western Airlines is hoping to come back. Apparently there was some glitch with their credit card payments (they didn’t have a merchant number so none of the money was actually getting to them) and they are working with Pay Pal right now to set something up. We’ll see if that actually works. They will probably have a PR nightmare on their hands even if it does.

The Cranky Flier also expressed doubt of Western Airlines plan to “steal” Canadian travelers. However, again, I think that it is more plausible than you think. The border really isn’t bad unless you are trying to cross on the Friday afternoon of a long weekend. Yes it does back up sometimes, but that certainly doesn’t stop people from using it! I’m a Canadian who is now living in the Bellingham area so I have my fair share of experience with the border. Already there are many people who come down from Vancouver to take advantage of the cheap direct flights from Bellingham to Las Vegas.

Although I think that it will be hard for them to recoup – I think that they do have a chance! I’m not giving up on Western yet – mostly because I really want to have more flight options right here in Bellingham!
