For several years, Bellingham and Whatcom County have been far ahead of the state average for new small business openings. While there are several large employers in town (WWU, St. Joseph’s hospital, the refineries, Bellingham School District) many people in our area work in small business.
Perhaps this is why the Bellingham Farmers Market is so successful. What started just over ten years ago as a dream for several WWU students has now become an organization with 2 markets each week, a new site and multiple events throughout the summer.
Not only do Bellingham people work for small business, they thrive on supporting it. I haven’t got the chance to go to the market this year yet, but I had a great time there last summer. There were many different types of ethnic food and snacks, fresh produce (much of it organic) and all kinds of wonderful crafts.
The other nice thing about the Bellingham Farmers Market is the wonderful mix of residents and tourists who all have fun at the market. Tourists enjoy the Bellingham Farmers Market because it is one of the largest in the state and residents like it the opportunity to get quality produce and crafts and support local business.
So if you are looking for something new to do this summer, check out the Bellingham Farmers Market. The Saturday market is on Railroad and Chestnut and is open from 10am to 3pm through December. Fairhaven hosts the Wednesday market from 3-7pm on the Village Green just behind Village Books.
Have fun!
