Tuesday night the Whatcom County Boundary Review Board took no action paving the way for Sudden Valley city hood supporters to take the next step. Supporters now have 180 days to collect 270 signatures in the Sudden Valley area. For now, government officials are letting the proposal go through the proper channels, in spite of disagreeing with it. Both Whatcom County and Bellingham City Council officials oppose the idea of the City of Sudden Valley because they fear that it will further damage the Lake Whatcom watershed (the source of drinking water for 86,000 people) and fear that there is no industry in that area to support the city.
Supporters of the City of Sudden Valley say that those arguments are “hogwash” and that a change in governance will not change the water quality. Currently, the taxes paid by Sudden Valley residents go to the county. Residents would like to see that money, along with their monthly dues to the association, stay in Sudden Valley.
Both the City of Bellingham and Whatcom County could interfere with the proposal by filing a lawsuit, or by opposing it in later stages of the proposal.
